Paying university tuition from abroad: US, UK, Australia and Canada (2026)
Tuition is usually the largest international payment a family ever makes, so a 1% difference in the exchange rate can mean hundreds or thousands in your home currency. The steps below apply whichever country you study in; the country notes cover what is specific to each. Always follow the payment instructions on your university's own bill or finance pages, which take precedence over anything here.
Four steps that avoid the expensive mistakes
- Read the bill first. Universities list the payment methods they accept, the deadline, and the reference (usually your student ID) that must go with the payment. Some accept only certain methods for international payers.
- Compare the total cost, not the fee. For each option, work out how much of your home currency it takes for the university to receive the exact amount on the bill. That one number includes the transfer fee, the exchange-rate markup and any intermediary deductions. How markups work.
- Leave time. Bank wires commonly take 2–5 business days and can be slowed by intermediary banks and public holidays in either country. Aim to pay at least two weeks before the deadline.
- Keep records. Save the payment confirmation, the exchange rate you received and the university's receipt. Visa applications and banks in your home country may ask for them.
Common ways to pay
| Method | How it works | Things to check |
|---|---|---|
| The university's payment platform | Many universities partner with an international payment service (Flywire is one widely used example). You pay in your own currency, often by local bank transfer, and the payment is matched to your student account automatically. | The cost sits mainly in the exchange rate the platform quotes. Compare it with a same-day bank or transfer-service quote for the amount the university receives. |
| International bank wire (SWIFT) | Your bank converts the money and sends it to the university's bank account. | Wire fee plus the bank's markup, and intermediary banks may deduct fees in transit. Choose the "OUR" charge option so the full amount arrives, and include your student ID. Intermediary fees explained. |
| Digital money transfer service | Online transfer services convert near the mid-market rate for a stated fee and pay into the university's local bank account. | Confirm first that your university accepts payments arriving from a transfer service and how to add your reference. Large amounts may need extra verification, which takes time. |
| Card payment | Some universities accept debit or credit cards online. | Your card issuer's foreign-transaction fee and rate apply, and some universities add a card surcharge. |

United States
- Universities issue a tuition bill each term with a due date. Many offer an international payment platform as well as wire details.
- The SEVIS I-901 fee for F-1 and J-1 students is paid separately to the US government before the visa interview, not to the university; check the current amount on the official Study in the States (DHS) website.
- The I-20 lists estimated costs and the funds you need to show, so keep proof of funds and payments together.
United Kingdom
- Many universities ask international students for a tuition deposit before issuing the CAS needed for a Student visa, then the balance at enrolment, sometimes in instalments.
- The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is paid to the UK government with the visa application, not to the university.
- Pound sterling can move sharply, and there are often months between the deposit and the balance, so some families convert in stages.
Australia
- Institutions usually require the first study period's tuition and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to be paid before they issue the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) needed for the student visa.
- Refund rules if a visa is refused are set out in the offer terms, so read them before paying.
- Once in Australia, students can often pay later terms locally (for example by BPAY) from an Australian account.
Canada
- Many colleges and universities ask for a tuition deposit to confirm the offer, with the balance due by term.
- A study permit application requires proof of financial support; the amounts are set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and change over time, so check IRCC's website.
- Providers report international transfers of CAD 10,000 or more to FINTRAC as routine compliance; never split payments to avoid reporting.
Timing the exchange rate
Nobody can reliably predict exchange rates. If the deadline is weeks away, converting in two or three stages reduces the risk of doing it all on a bad day. You can set a rate alert for a target rate. Check whether your home country limits how much residents can send abroad each year and which documents it asks for with tuition payments; for example, mainland China has a USD 50,000-equivalent yearly purchase quota, and tuition above it needs supporting documents.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to pay tuition through the university's payment platform or by bank wire?
It depends on the platform's quoted exchange rate versus your bank's rate and fees on the same day. Compare how much of your currency each option needs for the university to receive the exact amount billed.
Can I pay tuition with a money transfer service?
Often yes, if the university accepts incoming payments from such services into its bank account. Check the university's payment instructions and include your student ID as the reference.
What reference should I include with a tuition payment?
Use exactly what the university asks for, usually the student's full name and student ID number. Without it the payment may not be matched to the account in time.
How early should I pay?
At least two weeks before the deadline for bank wires, longer around public holidays. Deposits that unlock a CAS, CoE or offer confirmation are worth paying even earlier.
