Who sends money from the US to Guatemala
Common senders: workers supporting family, diaspora communities sending regular monthly support, and people paying bills back home.
About this corridor
The US–Guatemala corridor is one of the largest in Latin America relative to the receiving economy: remittances are a major share of Guatemala's GDP. Many senders still pay cash at a neighbourhood agent, which is often the most expensive way in; funding from a US bank account and choosing deposit to Banrural or Banco Industrial usually saves more than chasing a promo.
Worked example: sending 500 USD
Using the ExchangeRate-API rate on 2026-10-08, 1 USD = 7.6364 GTQ, our estimate model gives these results for sending 500 USD:
| Provider | Est. fee | Est. received | Total cost vs mid-market |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revolut | 1.50 USD | 3,787.72 GTQ | 30.49 GTQ |
| Wise | 4.00 USD | 3,787.66 GTQ | 30.55 GTQ |
| Remitly | 0.00 USD | 3,772.39 GTQ | 45.82 GTQ |
| Western Union | 5.00 USD | 3,704.43 GTQ | 113.78 GTQ |
| Bank wire (typical) | 20.00 USD | 3,573.84 GTQ | 244.37 GTQ |
In this example Revolut delivers roughly 213.88 GTQ more than a typical bank wire. Rates move daily and providers change pricing, so treat this as an illustration from our model; the live calculator above and the provider's own quote are what count. See how we estimate.
Sending to Guatemala: what to know
- Payout options: bank deposit (Banrural, Banco Industrial, BAM and others), cash pickup at bank branches and agents, and mobile wallets on some providers.
- Cash pickup remains common outside Guatemala City, but a bank deposit usually comes with a better rate.
- The quetzal moves in a narrow range against the dollar, so the provider's margin matters more than timing.
Rules and limits
In the US: Under the CFPB Remittance Transfer Rule, US providers must disclose the exchange rate, fees and the amount to be received before you pay, and you can generally cancel for free within 30 minutes. Since 1 January 2026 a 1% federal excise tax applies to transfers you pay for with cash, a money order, a cashier's check or a similar physical instrument; transfers funded from a US bank account or a US-issued debit or credit card are exempt. Gifts to one person above the annual gift-tax exclusion ($19,000 for 2025 and 2026) require a Form 709 filing, though tax is rarely due; ask a tax professional.
In Guatemala: Remittances are paid out by banks and agents supervised by Guatemala's Superintendencia de Bancos. Recipients collecting cash need their DPI (national ID) and the transfer reference.
How to pick the cheapest option
- Compare the amount received, not the fee. "Zero fee" offers usually hide their cost in the rate. How markups work.
- Small amounts: watch fixed fees. Large amounts: watch the markup.
- Avoid intermediary deductions. SWIFT wires can lose $10–30 in transit. Why.
