Who sends money from Japan to Vietnam
Common senders: technical intern trainees and Specified Skilled Workers, international students, and long-term residents supporting family.
About this corridor
Japan is one of Vietnam's largest sources of remittances, driven by technical intern trainees and Specified Skilled Workers. Japanese bank remittance fees are high for small amounts, so many workers use registered funds transfer providers that deliver to Vietcombank, BIDV or Agribank accounts.
Worked example: sending 100,000 JPY
Using the ExchangeRate-API rate on 2026-10-08, 1 JPY = 164.18 VND, our estimate model gives these results for sending 100,000 JPY:
| Provider | Est. fee | Est. received | Total cost vs mid-market |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | 758 JPY | 16,293,581 VND | 124,466 VND |
| Revolut | 300 JPY | 16,286,949 VND | 131,098 VND |
| Remitly | 0 JPY | 16,221,030 VND | 197,017 VND |
| Western Union | 791 JPY | 15,962,495 VND | 455,552 VND |
| Bank wire (typical) | 3,162 JPY | 15,501,427 VND | 916,620 VND |
In this example Wise delivers roughly 792,155 VND more than a typical bank wire. Rates move daily and providers change pricing, so treat this as an illustration from our model; the live calculator above and the provider's own quote are what count. See how we estimate.
Sending to Vietnam: what to know
- Payout options: bank account (e.g. Vietcombank, BIDV, Techcombank) and, on some providers, cash pickup or home delivery.
- Bank delivery to major Vietnamese banks is widely supported and often arrives the same day.
- Home cash delivery exists in parts of Vietnam but usually costs more than a bank deposit.
Rules and limits
In Japan: Overseas transfers in Japan go through banks or funds transfer service providers registered with the FSA; Type II providers are capped at JPY 1 million per transfer. For overseas transfers above JPY 1 million, financial institutions file a report with the tax office.
In Vietnam: Inward remittances to individuals in Vietnam are generally exempt from personal income tax. Recipients can receive VND, or foreign currency through authorised banks, under State Bank of Vietnam rules.
How to pick the cheapest option
- Compare the amount received, not the fee. "Zero fee" offers usually hide their cost in the rate. How markups work.
- Small amounts: watch fixed fees. Large amounts: watch the markup.
- Avoid intermediary deductions. SWIFT wires can lose $10–30 in transit. Why.
